The short answer is that OpenID is your login to all sites that support it. That means you will never have to sign up for sites again, you can just use your OpenID to sign in. You will never have to remember the username and password you used for a site or use a password database to store all your passwords. You can just sign in with your OpenID and no site can steal your password because it doesn't ever get access to it.
An OpenID provider is a site that gives you your OpenID. A consumer is a site that wants to see if you are who you say you are (for example, Moneygement is a consumer). When you enter your OpenID in a consumer site, it contacts your provider, and the provider asks you if you want to sign in to that site. If you indicate that you do, you will be taken back to the site and signed in.
